Community Air Monitoring

What's in our air? When the City decided to move forward with demolishing the underground water tank, residents were concerned about potential health impacts from the dust.

In 2024, our partners at the Delaware Sea Grant connected us to the Clean Air Council who provided free Purpleair monitors to install locally to gather baseline air quality information for monitoring, research (including citizen science), and advocacy.

A few neighbors stepped forward to host monitors, and we are collecting data next to the Rodney Reservoir. You can find the results on the Purpleair website.

What's Next

We are still looking for volunteers to host free monitors, especially if close to the Rodney Reservoir or  major traffic corridors such as 4th Street, Lancaster, Union, and adjacent I-95. The set-up requires Wi-Fi access and an electrical outlet–ideally on a front porch. Please reach out if you might be able to host an air monitor at your home, business, church, school, or center.  greenforthegreatergoodde@gmail.com â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

In addition to seeking community members to host more air monitors, we are working with the Delaware Sea Grant and UD partners to save that data for future projects. Going forward work we want to raise awareness about air quality in our neighborhoods and do cool stuff with the data we collect, for example, attempting to monitor the impact of the hundreds of native trees and vegetation--green infrastructure--that will soon be planted at the Rodney Reservoir Park. If you have a background with data collection, science research, citizen science and/or public health and might be willing to engage with the project, we would love to hear from you.
