This newsletter includes an update about Wilmington City Council’s resolution supporting the restoration of the Rodney Reservoir Community Garden and ways you can get involved in efforts to get the garden ready for this growing season.
WHO WE ARE: Green for the Greater Good is a group of neighbors working to transform the Rodney Reservoir into a beautiful community and nature-focused park for all to enjoy.
1. CITY COUNCIL PASSES RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE RODNEY RESERVOIR COMMUNITY GARDEN!
Great news!! On February 5th, Wilmington City Council passed Resolution 26-009 urging the City of Wilmington to fully restore the Rodney Reservoir Community to 62 plots in time for this year's gardening season and consider collaborating with the community on operations.
Many thanks to Council Member Willauer for her leadership in bringing this legislation forward, to the five council members who signed on as co-sponsors, and to all who voted yes! It was great to see such strong support for expanding access to community gardening. You can read more about it in Council’s press release here.
Many thanks are also due to all the community members who came out to the committee hearing on Jan. 28 and the full council meeting on Feb. 5, especially everyone who made public comment! Your voices and advocacy were a key factor in earning Council’s support!

2. NEXT STEPS
With the backing of the City Council, the next step is to seek the City Administration’s support for the goal of rebuilding all the garden plots so as many residents as possible are able to garden this year.
If resources or capacity are the obstacle, we are asking the Mayor to allow the community to take the lead in restoring and relaunching the community garden. Green for the Greater Good and West Side Grows Together have offered to bring together the needed resources and volunteers to build the remaining 42 plots and to operate the garden. The original community garden was built by community volunteers and managed by West Side Grows Together under an agreement with Public Works. We are offering to do it again for this year.
3. TAKE ACTION: ASK THE MAYOR TO RESTORE THE RODNEY RESERVOIR COMMUNITY GARDEN!
We want to demonstrate strong community support for the restoration of the Rodney Reservoir Community Garden. You can help by signing this petition that asks the Mayor to act on the recently passed City Council resolution. Thank you to everyone who has already signed on! Please spread the word about the petition to your neighbors and to local garden enthusiasts!
